Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)

The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 is the current iteration of the ESEA, the federal government’s primary mechanism for holding public schools accountable, closing achievement gaps among different student populations and supporting schools in improvement efforts. ESSA creates a long-term stable federal policy that gives states additional flexibility and encourages states and schools to innovate, while at the same time being accountable for results. The act generally includes separate authorizations for various programs. This flexibility from the U.S. Department of Education allows Maine to implement its own statewide plan to improve educational outcomes for all students, close achievement gaps and increase the quality of instruction.

ESEA grant funds are used in RSU #38 to provide intervention for students who are not meeting literacy or math standards in the elementary grades in our two smaller elementary schools (which are eligible for Title I services) and for K-12 professional development to increase student achievement (through Title II projects).
